AFTER SCHOOL

One World Project's After School program is a place where up to 15 children come together to play, discover, have fun, and make friends while they learn and practice Spanish. We offer After School programming 5 days a week, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm for students ages 5-10. Students who attend elementary school at P.S. 130, P.S. 154, and P.S. 230 can be picked up at school by teachers from One World Project, and walk to OWP as a group.

Keep reading for an overview of each of our programs, and see which is right for your child!

Valle

Valle is an extension of our Mar and Montañas classrooms and open only to those enrolled in OWP’s UPK programs, creating a special community in which students from both classes come together to create, play, and connect.

We intentionally balance active exploration with quiet moments, as we listen and adjust each day to the classroom environment and individual students. Students will receive a snack (or make it themselves!) and replenish their energies in a warm and familiar community.

Valle meets every day from Monday through Friday from 3-5pm at 302 Vanderbilt Street.  Families can enroll Monday through Friday; or Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays; or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Alebrijes

Alebrijes is our afterschool program for kindergartners, intended as a comforting and familiar space to help ease the transition to elementary school, as well as offering a return and connection to existing community for those OWPers who were with us in preschool. Alebrijes offers a caring place to talk through all our feelings, and a nurturing environment where they can continue learning through play both inside and outdoors.

As opposed to a more rigid daily kindergarten schedule, we strive to offer a more unstructured environment that allows students to build on and work through their school experiences, and where they can feel safe to explore, create, and follow their interests freely.

Alebrijes meets every day from Monday through Friday from 3-5pm (although families can sign up for a M/W/F or Tues/Thurs schedule if that fits better for them).

Súper Dragones

Our Súper Dragones classroom is intended for 1st and 2nd-graders at any Spanish level: an introduction to the language for those without previous experience, and a chance for more intermediate and advanced students to build and strengthen their grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills.

We host two different sections, at either 302 Vanderbilt Street or 44 Seeley Street. Like Alebrijes, this space is an opportunity for students to talk through feelings, and create a nurturing environment where they can continue learning through play both inside and out. Students will spend time reading and writing and making art, playing outdoors and cooking, and nurturing friendships. Throughout, they will build and strengthen social-emotional connections in addition to their Spanish language abilities.

Súper Dragones meets Monday through Friday at 323 Vanderbilt Street and 44 Seeley Street from 3-5pm. Families can choose a schedule that meets their needs.

Español Studio

This class is intended for students in 3rd through 5th grade with an intermediate level of Spanish comprehension. All levels of comfort and experience with speaking Spanish are welcome.

Classes will emphasize improving Spanish language skills, centered around a particular daily theme to inspire hands-on activities. Language learning will be a priority in this project-based program, in which students will nurture an authentic language practice while doing, making, and creating. Español Studio will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 302 Vanderbilt Street. Families can sign up for 1, 2 or all 3 days, and choose the schedule that works for them.

  • LUNES de Makers: Students will design, build, sculpt, fix, and mend creations of all kinds in our very own makerspace. Students can respond to an open-ended prompt for inspiration, or are invited to use any of our tools and materials to bring a specific vision to life.

  • MIERCOLES de Arte: Art is a core part of every classroom at OWP, and here students will have a chance to explore and discover different ways and means of visual expression, while pursuing the techniques and projects that feel most meaningful to them. In addition to exposure to the work and lives of particular artists that might serve as inspiration, nurturing individual creativity will be a focus here. Students will be encouraged to try new things, take artistic risks, and develop pieces driven by each child’s curiosity and wonder.

  • VIERNES de Stop Motion: Join us after school on Fridays for weekly Stop Motion Workshops at One World Project! Students will spend time learning about different techniques, creating their own unique characters, and brainstorming brand new stories, all in a supportive Spanish-immersion environment. Small class sizes will allow children to explore their individual interests and develop skills at any level, from an introduction for those with no experience to a more advanced approach. Students will strengthen not only their stop motion and animation abilities, but also their storytelling and communication skills – we’ll get the chance to work both individually and collaboratively, supporting our peers and workshopping our own ideas. This program will meet once per week on Friday afternoons at 302 Vanderbilt Street. It is open to children in 3rd and 4th grades with any level of Spanish language ability.

Súper Grupo

Súper Grupo is designed for students in 3rd through 5th grade with an advanced level of Spanish comprehension skills. This will be an opportunity for students who already have a firm grasp of Spanish to deepen their relationship with the language. Students will have ample speaking and conversational opportunities, as well as chances to hone reading and writing skills through arts, crafts, games, and collaborative projects.

Súper Grupo will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 302 Vanderbilt Street and 44 Seeley Street from 3-5pm. If there is sufficient interest, we will form 2 groups: one for 3rd-graders, and one for 4th and 5th-graders
