A Community of Learners

Counselors-in-Training

CITs (Application Deadline: March 19, 2024)

Our teacher training pipeline is a huge part of all we do at One World Project -- we are always excited to work with the next generation of young educators, to exchange ideas, and to share OWP's unique educational philosophy. Our innovative CIT Program began in 2018, and now welcomes a group of Spanish-speaking young people each summer to learn more about OWP's approach to early-childhood education, gaining exciting hands-on experience at our Hola Summer! camp.

We invite everyone from our community to nominate CIT candidates, and to share our application with high school counselors and Spanish teachers, elected officials, and community-based organizations. Each summer, we are always thrilled to bring a new generation of Spanish-speaking, forward-thinking, and community-minded educators to OWP.

We offer a range of positions open to all middle and high-school aged kids who are passionate about education, and interested in gaining experience in the classroom. Through these programs, we provide support for young educators at any level of prior experience, and help them to pursue their individual interests while sharing One World Project's innovative approach to early childhood education.

Over the course of our summer camp, kids get the chance to hone their skills, engaging with students and connecting with dedicated and experienced OWP teachers. As participants progress through the program and spend more time in the classroom, they’ll get the chance to take on more individual projects, and spend time reflecting on their classroom experiences.

Please see a list of roles and requirements below. For more information about specific job opportunities or questions about the application process, please reach out to joanne@oneworldproject.org

  • Junior CIT's (ages 11-13)

  • CIT's (ages 14-17)

  • Junior Counselors (ages 15-17, 1 year of CIT experience required)

  • Counselors (aged 18+, 1 year of CIT and up to 3 years of Junior Counselor required)

CITs join the OWP team in creating a safe learning community, building relationships with campers, teachers and families alike, and gaining firsthand professional experience in a classroom setting. Luckily for us, they also bring with them fresh perspectives, valuable ideas, and thoughtful reflections, all of which makes OWP a more diverse and interesting place.

CITs spend time in our Spanish-immersion learning environments and practice OWP’s approach to concepts like social-emotional learning, open-ended art, and using an anti-bias lens. When they feel comfortable and ready, they also get the chance to participate in lesson planning and facilitate different explorations and activities related to their strengths and interests.

During their time at OWP, CITs are invited to create their own daily journal with their experiences, observations, and reflections, as a way to process all of their learning and growth. We also offer individual coaching sessions for our realizing that everybody has different needs and varied backgrounds. This allows participants to broaden their understanding of OWP's educational philosophy, to receive reflective feedback, and to focus more deeply on their own areas of growth and interest

Check out some testimonials from last summer’s group of CITs!

  • “Yes, I would [recommend this job to my friends] because you get to experience new things with the children and make new friends and memories with the kids, and it’s a wonderful place to be at.”

  • “The kids are so sweet and… they are so friendly. The teachers are also very nice and we have a lot of fun.”

  • “I would [recommend this experience] because it’s just so beautiful how close you can get to the kids and grow with them, and I just loved the experience.”

  • “The opportunity to work directly with children in various activities such as games, crafts, and educational sessions was incredibly fulfilling. It allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge practically and adapt my approach based on individual and group dynamics.”

  • “Engaging with children allows me to see the world through their eyes, fostering creativity, empathy, and resilience. Additionally, I believe that by investing in the younger generation, I am contributing to a brighter future for our communities. This program offers me the opportunity to channel my enthusiasm into meaningful experiences that benefit both the children and myself as a future educator.”

We have closed the application for the 2024 camp season. Please stay tuned for next year, and if you know any 14 to 17 year olds who are fluent in Spanish and English, community-minded, and thoughtful team players, please send them our way!

One World Project pays CITs $15 per hour for training and their time at camp.
